outhwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights, is pleased to offer women state-of-the-art robotic surgery with the da Vinci S Surgical System. Robotic surgery is one of the least invasive and most effective options for women who undergo complex hysterectomies and other gynecological procedures.

“We are the premier community hospital utilizing robotic technology, and we have created an extremely successful program here,” says John Alton, MD. “Da Vinci has made a remarkable impact on gynecological procedures and has also put Southwest General on the map as a cutting-edge hospital in gynecology. For many women, da Vinci has allowed them to get back to their families and life quicker, and that in itself makes up for the anxiety and fear of having surgery.”

The da Vinci System takes minimally invasive surgery to a new level. It requires only small incisions—roughly the size of a dime—and offers patients many remarkable benefits, including less scarring; less post-operative pain and discomfort; less risk of infection; less blood loss; shorter recovery and faster return to normal activities.

With robotic surgery, the surgeon operates from a special console, which provides a three-dimensional view of the operating field and up to ten times the magnification of the human eye. These features make it easier for the surgeon to see vital anatomical structures.

While seated at the console, the surgeon grasps the da Vinci master controls with his or her fingers to manipulate the System’s small, robotic arms. These arms hold specialized micro-instruments. As the surgeon manipulates the controls, the System moves the robotic arms and scales and translates the surgeon’s finger and wrist movements into precise movements of the micro-instruments. The robotic arms can rotate 360 degrees, offering great flexibility and range of motion. This means the surgeon can more easily approach structures during complicated procedures and has a greater ability to dissect delicate vessels and nerves. daVinci technology also helps to reduce tremors of the human hand and, therefore, may offer increased precision as well.

The robotic system does not work on its own. The surgeon has complete control of the equipment at all times and performs every surgical step. The System cannot be programmed and does not make decisions on its own. From the safety standpoint, the daVinci only moves when a number of criteria are met. If a problem arises that cannot be managed by the robotic approach, the surgical team is in a position to rapidly and efficiently manage the issue.

Not all patients are candidates for robotic surgery. The surgeon will determine the best approach for each case. For those women who are candidates, robotic surgery can be used for hysterectomy, reproductive surgeries, endometriosis, fibroid removal, pelvic prolapse, endometrial cancers and ovarian or cyst removal.
